Breathe deeply, raise your arms, sit down and take a few steps. If the dress stays where it should, you have a good basis for the rest of the conversation. If you keep straightening it by hand every time you move, it is worth finding out why before you grow attached to the design.

What a corset actually does

A corset is more than a decorative part of the dress. It holds the bust in place and defines the waistline. On strapless designs, it also carries the whole weight of the dress from the waist up on its own. Much of what makes a dress feel ‘uncomfortable’ starts here: a corset that slips, digs in under the arm or twists when you sit down.

That is why it helps to see the corset as a piece of construction rather than decoration. Embroidery, lace and beads are what you see. What lies beneath is what you feel.

The layers inside

In corseted dressmaking, the bodice is generally not a single piece of fabric. The visible layer, whether embroidered or lace, is usually backed by a supporting layer, with a lining against the skin. Between them there may be strips of reinforcement, known as boning, which hold the shape and stop the edge from folding over. Sometimes the top edge also has a band that helps keep the corset in place on the body.

Dresses are not all constructed the same way, and you can’t see the difference in a photograph. A corset can look rigid and be very comfortable, or look soft and shift with every step. The only reliable way to know is to ask how the design you are trying on is constructed, and to feel it on your body.

Lacing or zip

The back of a corset usually fastens in one of two ways. A zip gives a smooth line and is quick to close. Lacing lets you adjust how snugly the corset fits as the day goes on. That matters if you expect your measurements to change slightly between morning and evening, after a meal or after several hours on your feet.

Lacing has its limits, though. It allows fine adjustment, but it is no substitute for the right size. If it has to be pulled as tight as it will go for the corset to sit properly, the room for adjustment disappears just when you need it most. At your fitting, check how much room is left in both directions, not just whether it closes.

With straps, strapless or detachable

The shape of the corset changes how the support is distributed. Here are a few examples from the dresses we have in the atelier, with details taken from the catalogue:

The Love 306 dress has a hand-embroidered sweetheart corset, tulle straps with appliqués and a laced back. The straps can help spread the weight, and the lacing allows adjustment.

The Love 307 dress is designed as a 2-in-1. The strapless, hand-embroidered corset is detachable and laces up at the back. The long empire skirt in silk chiffon can be considered on its own.

The Love SC44 is a short dress in Duchess taffeta, with a strapless corset, a straight neckline, an A-line skirt and a bow at the back.

A strapless corset relies entirely on how it sits on the body. A corset with straps has an extra point of support, but the straps need checking too. If they are too tight they pull the edge upwards, and if they are too loose they stop helping at all.

What to check at your fitting

Bring the lingerie or strapless bra you plan to wear on the day to your fitting. Otherwise, your bust will sit differently from the way it will on the day itself. Then work calmly through a few checks:

Breathing. Take a few deep breaths. The corset should hold you, not constrict you. If after ten minutes it is all you can think about, say so.

Sitting. Sit on a chair with your back straight, then sit relaxed. The top edge should not fold over, and it should not cut into you under the arm or across the ribs.

Arms. Raise them, reach forward and give someone a hug. In a strapless dress you will notice straight away if the bodice slips.

Walking and turning. Take a few steps, and climb a step if there is one nearby. Notice whether the weight of the skirt pulls the corset down.

Waist. The waist seam or waistline should fall where it feels comfortable to you, no higher or lower than your body finds natural.

Back. Check that the lacing or zip lies flat, without creasing or showing through the fabric.

If one of these checks doesn’t go well, the dress isn’t necessarily ruled out. It may simply need an alteration, and an alteration is easier to discuss when you know exactly where you feel the problem.

What alterations can do

Altering a corset is finer work than altering a skirt. Small changes involve the length of the straps or the position of certain seams. Others go into the inner construction and take longer. The time needed depends on what has to change, the fabric being worked and how the design is made. For that reason it can’t be set in advance, before the dress has been seen on you.

When you come to the atelier, it helps to bring specific observations: ‘it slips when I raise my arms’, ‘it presses under my arm when I sit down’, ‘I can’t take a deep breath’.
